RV Tip: How to save on RV fuel costs

Did you know that you could be saving hundreds of dollars at the pump?

Fuel is a one of the biggest expenses you will likely accrue when living and traveling full-time in an RV. Our motorhome has a 150-gallon diesel tank so it can be quite expensive to fill it up. Plus, we usually fill up at truck stops since they are much easier with our rig, but the downside is truck stops tend to be more expensive than a regular gas station.

We’re constantly looking for new ways to save money and cut back on our expenses. One of the ways we’re able to save lots of money is with the Open Roads fuel program.

Open Roads is a discount fuel program open to anyone who purchases diesel fuel, whether you have a diesel pickup truck, RV, or a semi. By joining the program you will get access to discount diesel prices at specified locations such as Loves and Travel Centers of America.

Current members save an average of 30 to 40 cents per gallon off the pump price. We’ve been able to get discounts of almost $1 off per gallon at certain stations. And when you have 100-gallon tank, that saves a LOT of money overtime!

There are no signup or membership fees to join and no long-term contracts to sign. However, Open Roads’ fee is 10% of the savings per gallon. You will need to provide your bank account information as the funds are debited from your account when you use the card at participating locations.

Here’s how to access the program and get started:

  • Visit the Open Road fuel program website (owned by TSD Logistics)

  • Register and fill out the form to create an account

  • Add in your bank account details, social security number, and address

  • Once submitted and approved, Open Roads will mail your card to you

  • Once you receive the card in the mail, follow the instructions to activate the card

  • Download the Open Roads app to view participating locations and real-time prices in your area, along with transaction information from your card

  • Use the card at participating locations just like you would a debit card - you will need to use the commercial truck lanes at the back of most locations

  • Once you have your card in hand, you're ready to start saving

This has saved us hundreds of dollars since we’ve started it. As you can see in the above screen shot, at this particular fuel stop, we saved over $40 on filling up our tank just by using this discount program.
